The department of sociology has been offering courses at various levels since a very long time. The courses are designed to strike a balance between tradition and modernity. Aim of the department is to produce students, who, by understanding the contemporary complex patterns of social behaviour, are able to achieve success in their life.

The department offers courses at B.A., M.A. and M. Phil. level. Facility for Ph. D. is also available.

At UG Level, apart from theoretical orientation students are also taught practical/behavioural subjects like mass communication, rural and urban sociology etc. at PG level also, apart from core subjects, students are taught about new trends in sociology like sociology of health and medicine, globalization, popular culture and mass communication and women studies etc.

For the purpose of knowledge enhancement and better career prospects, the department has also started a PG Diploma course on, ‘Women & Human Rights’. The department is closely associated with Women’s Studies & Research Centre and actively participates in various activities run under the centre. The faculty is actively involved in various projects of the Centre. The department will also be playing a collaborative role in the newly introduced course of Master of Social Work.

The department is actively involved in the institutional activities also. The faculty has keen research interest and presents research papers in various national and international conferences and attends other events of sociological importance.

Under the auspice of Sociology Association, department organizes activities like debate, extempore, speeches, quiz, essay and other academic and cultural programmes and competition. Various subject specialists are also invited for guest lectures. The faculty also provides career counseling to students.
