The main focus of the research activities of the theoretical and experimental group include: Nanoscience & nanotechnology, Polymers, Glasses, intermetallics, MEMS based Sensors, Raman Spectroscopy, Amorphous materials, Semiconducting and magnetic materials for Spintronics and swift Heavy ion radiation, Superconductors, Molecular Electronic Structure Theory, Image compression.

The graduation course (B.Sc.)  started running in 1970, whereas the first PG course (M.Sc.) started in 2005. The courses are reviewed every year to keep up-to-date with current research trends in Physics.

In July 2011, the department has shifted to a new building equipped with modern infrastructure for students and faculty members. The new building, known as “School of Physical Sciences” was funded by DST under Curie Project. The department is equipped with state-of-art research facilities. The modern multimedia technology is integrated with conventional teaching methods to enhance effective quality of teaching.
